Remember, dear child, magic exists all around.
In the tiniest of things, waiting to be found.
Keep your eyes open, your heart full of cheer,
and maybe, just maybe, the fairies will appear…
from The Little Witch of Wilmcote by A.M.Carr
The magical village of Wilmcote lies just north of Stratford-upon-Avon, in the very heart of rural England.
Recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Wilmecote, the village was once surrounded by the ancient Forest of Arden, an old woodland filled with English oak trees and wild flowers … and magical fairies.
This enchanting place is best known as the childhood home of Mary Arden, the mother of William Shakespeare. Mary grew up on the family farm during the 16th century before marrying John Shakespeare and moving to Stratford-upon-Avon. Shakespeare would have known Wilmcote well – he even mentioned the village in The Taming of the Shrew. He grew up hearing the tales of mystical fairies in the nearby woods and captured their mischievous ways in his play A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Shakespeare’s love for the the ancient woodland was most apparent in As You Like It, which describes the old Forest of Arden as a place of freedom, friendship, nature and quiet magic. Much like today, when you walk through the remaining pockets of Wilmcote woodland and bewitching trees, you can escape everyday troubles and rediscover yourself amongst the trees…
The delightful series of books about The Little Witch of Wilmcote, written by A.M.Carr, were inspired by the same old folklore of rural England and the gentle magic, friendship and enchantment hidden all around the woods in and around Wilmcote.
